I almost called this Turkey Sabbath but that would probably have misled everyone into thinking that this was a post about turkey Sunday dinner. This is more like Sabbath from Turkey as in “rest from” it. After Canadian Thanksgiving, and six consecutive days of turkey/stuffing/potatoes, I wanted something light and fresh and citrusy. And I wanted seafood – scallops more precisely, because cooking them takes 4 minutes flat and that’s a pretty good awesomeness to time ratio. Now, despite the […]
Hey you! Yeah, you! You the type always looking for an excuse to caramelize an onion? I know your kind. Well, why not use said onion as a edible bowl for a hearty main or side? This vegan, gluten-free dish takes the classic combo of olives, tomatoes, and garlic, and beefs it up, ahem – meatlessly of course – with red lentils. Shown here garnished with feta, those looking for a dairy-free alternative can sub with vegan feta, or even avocado. Ingredients […]
Whiskey-flavoured cheddar cheese, caramelized onions, and roasted garlic – if you’re used to the kind of mac in cheese that lives in a box, then let’s just call this one the boutique hotel version.
Everybody’s grilling romaine lately, and it’s delicious all on its own as a side, but this recipe takes it a step further. The grilled romaine is chopped and combined with roasted garlic and parmesan cheese. This mixture – along with a lusciously runny poached egg becomes the filling that’s tucked inside a larger piece of romaine. Such a versatile recipe – this could easily be breakfast or lunch, or it would make a fun appetizer for a dinner party. You […]
Ever see that show on Spike TV a few years back – Deadliest Warrior – where they’d simulate a match up of historic fighters and their weapons of choice and see who’d out-violent whom? So it would be the Samurai versus the Mongols, or the Gurkhas against the French Foreign Legion? Well, that came to mind when I was conjuring up this recipe and others in the Drink Your…Vegetables series. When one of your ingredients is armed with sulfur, such as […]
Sexed-Up Shredded Wheat was born after a midnight shopping excursion for cereal. Out of 100+ variations, only 2 were the sugar free kind I was looking for. I liked that Shredded Wheat had only 1 ingredient, but back at home in my bowl, it looked pretty sad and tasted equally so, sending me rummaging thru my kitchen for stuff to liven it up.
Salty, savoury seaweed is paired with avocado, nectarines, and cashews and topped with a sumac and honey dressing in this eye-catching salad. Sumac is often associated with Middle Eastern cooking, but its sweet, citrusy flavour mingles beautifully with the honey, avocado oil, and rice wine vinegar dressing. Ingredients 6 tablespoons avocado oil 2 tablespoons rice wine vinegar 3 teaspoons sumac 4 teaspoons honey (Vegans, use your favourite sweetener) seaweed salad mix (I used a 25 gram/.09 ounce package, called seavegi, […]
A deliciously rich and creamy riff off a bacon, lettuce, and tomato sandwich. This recipe uses tomato paste for the base, along with a unctuous trifecta of bacon, butter, and goat milk. Sautéed basil stems add a mild peppery note and some gentle crunch. The whole thing is finished off with gooey oven-roasted tomatoes and a shaving of parmesan. Serve with grilled romaine on the side (recipe coming soon). Serves 2 Ingredients 1 pint tomatoes (something small like cherry or grape tomatoes) […]
